Lead Ornaments: Information on Material and Handling

Garden ornaments made of cast lead have a very long tradition in England. In almost every garden and park of The National Trust you will find figures, vases or planters made of cast lead. There is no other material for garden ornaments that has the same characteristics as lead: Its velvety matte patina with a silvery touch has an unsurpassed look that perfectly matches the natural environment of a garden.

Lead melts at a temperature of 327°C and is cast just below 400°C. Toxic fumes start to develop above a temperature of 500°C. Consequently, lead garden ornaments are totally safe - during the manufacturing process as well as in their final cast state. „You grow up with it“ as the English garden enthusiasts say.

Lead ornaments do not need any kind of maintenance or care; they can stay outside for decades and centuries without being harmed by the elements. Just the opposite, they will take on the unrivalled patina that lead develops over time. In 1913 Sir Edwin Lutyens wrote:

"Lead, if left to the kindly touch of wind and rain, will weather in silvery patches that accord better than anything else with green surroundings.

If a lead ornament should get damaged or if you would want to have a historic ornament restored please feel free to contact us. Our manufacturer in England is an expert in this field as well.
